Stop Hunger Now
Friday 17th July 2015
Stop Hunger Now is an international organisation that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid worldwide.
Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa (SHN SA) is a volunteer based meal packaging and results oriented nutrition programme, which was started in South Africa in 2009. There are currently two full-time operations (Johannesburg and Cape Town).
“Our vision is a Southern Africa without hunger. Our mission is transformation through education. Educating our donors, beneficiaries, volunteers and suppliers about the role they play in eradicating child hunger. Donated food is used to stimulate and encourage measurable results in Early Childhood Development centres.”
The World Food Programme’s “1000 day window” study on the irreversible effects of malnutrition for children in their infancy has resulted in the design of the Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa Hunger Eradication Programme.
Key to the programme is a series of meal packaging events, where volunteers package the meals. The meals are highly nutritious and comprise of rice, soya, dehydrated vegetable mix and a fortification pack of 23 essential minerals and vitamins specifically formulated to combat malnutrition (complying with the UNICEF standard).
An opportunity to provide fully balanced meals for pre-school children necessary for their holistic development
The meal packaging event is a fun and engaging way for volunteers to be part of the drive to end child hunger. 40 volunteers can package 10 000 meals in under two hours! Our volunteers range from children as young as four years old to senior citizens. Scholars that volunteer are awarded a Community Service Certificate.
Signature of Hope in conjunction with Carrick Financial Services (Pty) ltd pledged 100 Volunteers nationally and came together to use their hands and help achieve the million meal mark.
We are very proud to say that a part of history was made! The challenge was met and as a nation we packaged 1 202 040 meals. These meals will enable SHN SA to feed 5 000 children a healthy nutritious meal for 1 year!
